Promoting Health for Aging Workforce

Last month, the National Institute for Occupational Health and safety (NIOSH) launched the National Center for Productive Aging and Work (NCPAW), an online center designed to give employers the means they have to better serve the actual health of workers of advanced ages.
Using the U.S. Bls, 1 in 5 American workers has ended the age of 65, and by 2020, One 4 will be over the chronilogical age of 55. This presents a challenge to all employers, who can suffer from the initial health and safety concerns of any aging workforce at unprecedented levels. NCPAW wishes to meet this challenge by promoting total worker health, an example that integrates protection from workplace hazards along with the promotion of damage and illness prevention methods, all within the service of overall worker well-being.
By viewing the reasoning globally, an overall total worker health approach offers employers the luxury of combatting challenges on multiple fronts. The hope is usually that workers maintain better health as they age and receive adequate protection from hazards along with effective interventions to help remedy workplace injuries and illnesses.
To enhance total worker health, NIOSH recommends that employers think about the following:

  • Controlling hazards and exposures
  • Preventing injuries, illness and fatalities
  • Promoting safe and healthy work
  • Conducting risk assessment and control
